Wednesday – November 9th – 2 Peter 1:1     -----

1:1) This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior.

TIMELY ADVICE IS LOVELY, LIKE GOLDEN APPLES IN A SILVER BASKET.*

Welcome to Wednesday! Since I initiated the subject of Christmas decorating yesterday, today I want to share another great Christmas opportunity – the SunRise Christmas Depot.  This mission was formed to partner with families (identified by the local school districts) so they can provide joy during the holiday season. These families will be shopping at our unique Christmas Depot event on Saturday, December 10th where a small fee allows them to choose reduced priced gifts for their children. The Christmas Depot team has been working throughout the year preparing and collecting a variety of gift options for the children. But there are some extra items we would like to provide to these families as our gift to them. If the season of giving has you looking for serving opportunities, consider signing up to donate, volunteer on the day of the event, and/or sponsor a family. You can the Christmas Depot sign-ups by checking out the events page on either the SunRise App or SunRise Website.

In our pick verse today, we read Peter’s greetings to the churches of Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) to whom this letter was first sent. Even in this second letter Peter felt the need to re-establish his credibility by reminding his readers that he is a slave or bondservant of Christ. Any true leader of God’s people must be committed to the spiritual well-being of those they shepherd. Even though he was an apostle, a first-hand witness of the resurrection, and part of the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples, Peter shares that all believers share the same precious faith in Jesus that he experienced. In the last part of this verse Peter boldly states that Jesus’ position of authority comes from being God in the flesh. Long before the historical creeds were written down, Peter fully accepted the reality of Jesus being fully human and fully divine at the same time. Peter accepting what he couldn’t explain or understand through human logic serves as an excellent model for how we are to trust God in the things that go beyond our human wisdom. Attempting to fully understand the hidden mysteries of God will only provide space for the evil one to sow seeds of doubt.

Blessings
