5:3 Honor widows who are really widows.
4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God.

Welcome to Friday. Once again, we have almost completed another work week. My prayer is that your week has been blessed and filled with the opportunity for you to bless others. Our inspirational statement today fits in well with our church-wide study on “Awakening”. When we are awakened through the power of the Holy Spirit our lives are transformed into a closer image of God. The closer we are to God the clearer are God’s ways, God’s word, and God’s will. This creates in us a transformation of heart, mind, and soul. The result is we become people filled with God-directed belief and not people whose lives and life-choices are directed by the popular opinions of the society around us. If God’s belief in us was worth dying for, certainly our belief in God is worth the same price.
In our pick verse today, Paul begins a teaching on how believers are to treat widows within the life of a community of faith. While there are all kinds of ways we can grow in our personal faith, another aspect of life as a believer is to look outside ourselves to see those with special needs. In New Testament times widows had virtually no means of supporting themselves. The leaders of the early church felt responsible to care for Christian widows, but as in all things human, problems arose in ministering to their needs. The church leadership learned to adapt early and often in the begging of the movement, so new structures and guidelines had to be development that were fair to all involved. The church needed to distinguish between widows who really needed support and those who should, or could, be commended to the care of relatives. Paul points out that adult children are expected, as a matter of Christian piety, to care for their parents. This obligation is also extended to the role of grandchildren. First century middle east is no different than twenty-first century mid-west – we are called as Christians to assist those within the family of God who need help to live.
