IF YOU DON’T WANT THE FRUITS OF SIN IN YOUR LIFE, STAY OUT OF SIN’S ORCHARD.*
Welcome to Tuesday and the halfway mark of the month of June. Wow, at least for me, this year is moving along very fast. VBS is less than a week away, both mid-high and senior high mission trips are almost on the launching pad, and youth retreat is nearly visible on the horizon. As the summer whizzes by, be sure and take a moment to enjoy the creative handiwork of God in the flowers, trees, birds, and animals. Find a quiet place outdoors (but not in sin's orchard) and breath in the fresh air of creation. What an awesome way to know that our God is in control over all that exists.
Our pick verse today launches a straight-forward call to personal holiness in the lives of all believers. Paul jumps directly into one of the greatest sins in ancient Greece, and if we are honest a sin that still plagues our modern-day society. God calls all believers to a life of holiness. It goes without saying that when we claim to be a follower of Jesus, at any level or degree, we are to seek a life that avoids falling into sin. To fall short of sanctification is to miss the will of God intended for our lives. Immorality was extremely common throughout the pagan religions. The gods and goddesses were grossly immoral. Priestesses provided sexual services as an act of worship for men who attended their temples. Through their new life in Christ, sanctification required believers to abstain from sexual immorality of any kind. The sex life of a Christian can and should be an expression of holiness. God demands the sanctification of both men and women equally, the purification of all human affections, and the restoration of both men and women to the holy status God originally planned for humanity. While the Thessalonians were struggle with overcoming old “religious” practices, sadly our current society operates out of the temptation for self-pleasure and unrighteous justification.
