Thursday – May 13th – Colossians 3:18 (18-21) ---
3:18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.
20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.
21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

Hello Thursday! Lots to cover today in our scripture blog and we begin with a reminder we are looking at four specific verses of scripture both as a group and individually. Paul is teaching on what it looks like for a home that has its foundation on a Christlike attitude. We spent yesterday in an overview of these four verses wherein Paul insisted there must be harmony, balance, equality, and mutual respect for these verses to work together for the good of the family.
Verse eighteen is another of those mis-interpreted, mis-applied, mis-represented, and abused verses in scripture. To understand what this verse is not about take a moment to read Esther 2 from the Old Testament.
As we start to unpack this verse, we need to address the stumbling block that creates the greatest challenge with this passage – the word “submit”. The web-site marriageministry,org provides this working definition for healthy Christian marriages: Biblical submission in marriage is a wife making a choice not to overtly resist her husband's will. That is not to say she cannot disagree with him or that she cannot express her opinion. Indeed, a wife who practices submission is by definition a woman with strength of character.
Paul instructions for first century Christian wives in Colosse is to acknowledge the husband’s role as the spiritual leader of the family. This command from Paul does not imply inferiority, nor does it mean submitting to the point of committing sin at the husband’s direction. It is rather an attitude of respect for the responsibilities that God has given to the spiritual roles of husband and wife within a Christian home. Again, Paul is emphasizing the necessity of the husband being a highly committed follower of Jesus in order to properly assume the role of spiritual leader for the family. Second, Paul insists that spiritual leaders are intentional in their spiritual growth. Spiritual leaders are to constantly seek a stronger connection to the Lord on behalf of the family. In the homes where these important pieces are not present then submission becomes a tool of abuse and power.
